HOMELAND SECURITY SYMBOLS LIBRARY (HSSL) THE SOFTWARE PROGRAM
This Windows® software package contains hundreds of new Homeland Security Symbols you can select and print on adhesive-backed tape using your K-Sun LABELShop® 2010-PC Printer and MaxiLabel® V2 General Labeling Software. MaxiLabel® V2 Software must be installed on your computer first to be able to use the MaxiLabel® Homeland Security Symbols Library (HSSL). The HSSL program contains printable PDF documents of terms and definitions that will help with identification, understanding, and training.

NOTE: INCLUDED IN THE HSSL LIBRARY INSTALLATION ARE PRINTABLE ADOBE® PDF DOCUMENTS OF ALL THE HOMELAND SECURITY SYMBOLS ALONG WITH THE TERMS AND DEFINITIONS FOR EACH SYMBOL. This will provide you with a hard copy of all the symbols, colors, terms and definitions for a handy reference when making labels.

HSSL LIBRARY
The symbols library is divided into 4 sections. INCIDENT, NATURAL EVENT, OPERATIONS and INFRASTRUCTURE symbols.

n

INCIDENT SYMBOLS:
Noted by a triangle border on a purple tape with no further frame level colors.

NATURAL EVENT SYMBOLS:
Noted by a black triangle border with no further frame level colors.

OPERATIONS SYMBOLS:
Noted by a circle with four different levels of colors and circular frame designs depicting the level of operational readiness or condition of the event. The color level is represented by the color of the tape it is printed on.

INFRASTRUCTURE SYMBOLS:
Noted by a rectangle with four different levels of colors and rectangular frame designs depicting the condition of the facility or function. The color level is represented by the color of the tape it is printed on.

COLOR CODE
green=fully operational blue=operational, but filled to capacity or otherwise closed orange=operational, but partially damaged or partially incapacitated red=destroyed or totally incapacitated

COLOR VS. BLACK ON WHITE
The symbols are designed to be distinctive in either a color or a black and white environment. While a colored symbol frame can be used to denote the level of damage or operational status, the pattern of this frame also denotes the status so it is not mandatory that color frames or background colors be used. They are just more helpful for faster recognition of the level readiness.

HOW TO USE COLOR
The K-Sun LABELShop® 2010-PC Printer prints one color on a different color adhesive tape. You have 23 different size and color combinations to select from. See your K-Sun LABELShop® Tape Selection Chart for all colors available. When printing Homeland Security Symbols you can achieve the correct color coding by using the proper tape background color for the symbols and level of readiness. For INCIDENT symbols, print the symbol in black on purple/violet tape. For NATURAL EVENT symbols, print the symbol in black on white or clear tape. For OPERATIONS and INFRASTRUCTURE symbols, print the symbol in black or white on Green, Blue, Orange or Red Tape. Symbols can also be printed with Red or Black images on clear or white tape.

WHERE TO USE HOMELAND SECURITY SYMBOLS
MAPPING: The symbols were designed for application at the large and medium map scales typically used by emergency managers. If a very small symbol is required (below 12 point size), it is recommended that you use the category shape as the symbol, i.e. Triangle, Circle, or Rectangle. Additional Information can be provided via legend, labels, and attributes. Use your K-Sun LABELShop® 2010-PC Printer and MaxiLabel® V2 General Labeling Software to make text legends and labels that can be color coded and applied to your map legend or other documents and equipment. The labels have a permanent adhesive backing.

WALL CHARTS: Homeland Security Symbols and text descriptions and information can be placed on labels and then applied to wall charts, instructional cards, bulletins, walls, bulkheads, or where needed.

EQUIPMENT/COMMUNICATIONS: Special facilities and equipment can be identified with the proper color code and symbols.

TRAINING MATERIALS: Print terms and definitions from software. PDF's and Print (HSS) symbols for training manuals.
